The New York Police Department, already saddled with a number of
corruption scandals, saw its image further tainted today with the conviction of
a police detective for planting drugs on a woman and her boyfriend. The bench
verdict from Justice Gustin Reichbach in State Supreme Court in Brooklyn stemmed
from incidents committed in 2007 by the defendant, Jason Arbeeny, a 14-year
Police Department veteran who worked in the Brooklyn South unit. Last Friday,
thirteen New York Police Department officers, two sergeants and a lieutenant
were slapped with criminal charges that came just three days after the
embarrassing arrests of five officers in a separate gun-running probe. Michael Edwards, Founder of Criminal Justice
Reforms LLC, believes the internet and social media are quick to jump on police
corruption stories and the increase of anti-government movements across the
world attracts additional attention to them.
